Fred Catlin, Director

Fred has been involved in education since 1978 and as a head of Montessori schools since 1998. Before beginning Albemarle Montessori Children’s Community, Fred was head for eight years at Thacher Montessori School. Thacher Montessori is a leading Montessori school in the Boston suburb of Milton, serving over 270 children from 15 months to 14 years of age. Previously, Fred was head of Montessori Community School in Charlottesville for seven years.

Two decades before that, Fred ran a consulting business, served as a university administrator at the University of Virginia, and worked as an administrator at a private high school in Pennsylvania. He has also taught history at the high school and college levels, and coached lacrosse from youth through high school.

Fred has a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia, an M.A. in History from the University of Pennsylvania, a certificate in executive education from the Darden School of Business at UVa, and two Montessori credentials: one as an administrator from AMS, the American Montessori Society, and the other as a 3-6 teacher from AMI, the Association Montessori Internationale.

Fred is originally from Albemarle County where his two children were born. One is a Montessori elementary teacher in Cleveland, Ohio and the other is in law school after completing an appointment with Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta. Fred’s wife, Alice, works as a Montessori adolescent educator and consultant for AMI.

Kelly has been a Montessori Primary Guide since 1988. She has extensive experience working in the public and independent school world. In 2011, she received her National Board Certification in Education, which is an advanced teaching credential awarded by the US Department of Education, after undergoing a year-long training.

Prior to becoming a Montessori Guide, Kelly received her B.A. in Music Education from the Crane School of Music in NY. Her experience in education includes teaching in the Atlanta Public School system, as well as serving as the Instructor of Strings at Longwood College in Virginia. Kelly performed with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre and held theatre workshops for children. Kelly is an accredited meditation instructor for children. She received her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) three-to-six training in Atlanta, Georgia.

Kelly is originally from Richmond, Virginia. She is married to John Harding, a retired Professor of Music from Chapel Hill, University of Miami, and UNC Charlotte. Her daughter is a professional photographer living in Scotland with her husband and son. Kelly has always had a passion for music, and plays many instruments such as the violin, viola, mandolin, hammered dulcimer and guitar. She will be learning how to play claw-hammer banjo this summer. In her spare time, Kelly saves her pennies to visit her grandson in Edinburgh.

Community Activities

Child on pumpkin wagonLearning About Your Child: Throughout the year, we will offer seminars, workshops, presentations by guest experts in the field, and a library of books on the topics of child development, educational theory, psychology, cognitive science, parenting, and Montessori education. We will hold these events at times that are convenient to working parents, either in the evenings or on weekends.

Learning About the Community at AMCC
We will provide a weekly electronic newsletter with information about upcoming events, the children’s special activities, and news about the community. This parents-only newsletter will also have occasional articles about aspects of Montessori education, parenting tips, or new research in child development.

Community Activities at AMCC
Working with fellow parents, we will occasionally schedule fun activities for parents in the evenings and for the whole family on weekends. Activities could include parent potluck dinners, weekend excursions to a farm, family nature hikes, and community service events.
