What is an Absorbent Mind?

Child w/color box #1Is there a time in our lives when we take in everything around us, when we’re not distracted by the pressures of our daily lives and commitments? YES! Your young child (up to the age of six years) takes in the totality of the world around him or her. At Albemarle Montessori Children’s Community (AMCC), we call this the Absorbent Mind, a term used frequently by Maria Montessori.

As a child becomes more and more conscious of the surroundings, he or she takes in everything. Because there are so many stimuli available all the time to the younger child (up to about 4 and a half years of age), he or she tends to be easily distracted. But unlike an adult, your child doesn’t know how to sort the important from the extraneous. Everything is absorbed. AMCC is not your typical childcare program however. We don’t just entertain your child or ply him or her with academic information; AMCC helps prepare your child’s mind. Through individualized work and adaptation of our curriculum to your child’s needs, we build your child’s abilities and skills to begin filtering all of the stimuli into those that are useful and those that are not.

The human mind needs to develop the ability to focus, and this is one of our points of emphasis from the first day your child enrolls in our preschool. By helping your child discipline his or her mind through individually adapted activities (almost like a form of mental gymnastics!), we can help your child develop concentration, refine the ability to categorize and sequence, and be better prepared to succeed in elementary school and beyond!
